Proposed Internet Filter Seen as Censorship
Interesting article in the Adelaide Advertiser today about the Federal Governments proposed internet filter with over 95% of Adelaidenow readers rejecting the internet censorship scheme labelling it restrictive and a waste of money. Of the 2540 respondents to the poll in the newspaper, 95% said they didn’t support the plan saying adults should have free access to information.
The overwhelming majority of readers believed that parents should monitor their own childs internet use and placed more emphasis on parental control. It seems these readers in Adelaide are not alone in rejecting the proposed filter system, a great number of Australian’s in other states also have concerns over the restrictive nature of the filter.

You can also let me know your thoughts on whether you believe we need a government sponsored Internet filter or whether you believe it should be left to parents to manage what their children view or read on the net. Personally, my wife keeps a very careful eye on our 14 year old and what sites she visits and how she has set up and what information she provides on her social media sites such as Facebook and Myspace, although we can’t watch what she does 24 hours a day, and therein lies a problem, but is the answer a government filter system which affects everyone?
This will be a very interesting debate as it affects the freedom of what information we can access and up till now we have enjoyed total freedom with what we can and can’t access on the net.
